چکیده

GARCH (1,1) models are widely used for modelling processes with time varying volatility. These include financial time series, which can be particularly heavy tailed. In this paper, we propose a logtransform-based least squares estimator (LSE) for the GARCH (1,1) model. The asymptotic properties of the LSE are studied under very mild moment conditions for the errors. We establish the consistency, asymptotic normality at the standard convergence rate of √ n for our estimator. The finite sample properties are assessed by means of an extensive simulation study. Our results show that LSE is more accurate than the quasi-maximum likelihood estimator (QMLE) for heavy tailed errors. Finally, we provide some empirical evidence on two financial time series considering daily and high frequency returns. The results of the empirical analysis suggest that in some settings, depending on the specific measure of volatility adopted, the LSE can allow for more accurate predictions of volatility than the usual Gaussian QMLE. Let's get LADE: Robust estimation of semiparametric multiplicative volatility models

We investigate a model in which we connect slowly time varying unconditional long-run volatility with short-run conditional volatility whose representation is given as a semi-strong GARCH (1,1) process with heavy tailed errors. We focus on robust estimation of both long-run and short-run volatilities. Our estimation is semiparametric since the long-run volatility is totally unspecified whereas ...

Least Tail-Trimmed Squares for In...nite Variance Autoregressions

We develop a robust least squares estimator for autoregressions with possibly heavy tailed errors. Robustness to heavy tails is ensured by negligibly trimming the squared error according to extreme values of the error and regressors. Tail-trimming ensures asymptotic normality and superp -convergence with a rate comparable to the highest achieved amongst M-estimators for stationary data. Moreov...

Heavy Tail Behavior and Parameters Estimation of GARCH (1, 1) Process

In practice, Financial Time Series have serious volatility cluster, that is large volatility tend to be concentrated in a certain period of time, and small volatility tend to be concentrated in another period of time. While GARCH models can well describe the dynamic changes of the volatility of financial time series, and capture the cluster and heteroscedasticity phenomena. At the beginning of ...

Inference for Tail Index of GARCH(1,1) Model and AR(1) Model with ARCH(1) Errors

For a GARCH(1,1) sequence or an AR(1) model with ARCH(1) errors, it is known that the observations have a heavy tail and the tail index is determined by an estimating equation. Therefore, one can estimate the tail index by solving the estimating equation with unknown parameters replaced by quasi maximum likelihood estimation (QMLE), and profile empirical likelihood method can be employed to eff...

Properties and Estimation of GARCH(1,1) Model

We study in depth the properties of the GARCH(1,1) model and the assumptions on the parameter space under which the process is stationary. In particular, we prove ergodicity and strong stationarity for the conditional variance (squared volatility) of the process. We show under which conditions higher order moments of the GARCH(1,1) process exist and conclude that GARCH processes are heavy-taile...
